This is particularly handy for Android smartphones that have the fingerprint reader on the back. Sure, it takes a little bit of getting used to, but I (along with others I've shared this trick with) have found that the prints on the middle finger takes less damage than other fingers. Use the fingerprints on your middle finger. I've come across three workarounds to this problem. So, short of getting a hand double to unlock your handset for you, what can you do?
